How to Pick the Best Beard Style for Your Face Shape

For men who can carry the workload of a beard, you have to respect it! Growing & maintaining a beard can be a lengthy process & as any bearded man will know, daily, diligent work has often got to be put in. In fact, aside from the upkeep, beard envy is a real thing, & the temptation to try out the different beard styles you see on social media can often be counter-productive to the look you should be going for. You see lads, when it comes to sporting a beard, instead of being led by trends, it’s a decision that should be chosen by something a lot simpler - your face shape.
Understanding your face shape & the power of symmetry is key to determining what sort of beard style to sport & knowing the basics can go a long way on your quest to enhancing your facial features.
Of course, choosing the right beard shape for your face will depend on a few factors. Every face has its own unique considerations (such as your cheekbones, nose, &jawline), but there's some general advice you can follow to find the best-suited beard for you. Below, we break down the different beard styles to choose from & how to pick the best beard style for your face shape.
There’s so many facial hair styles – moustaches, goatees, etc - how does a guy know which look would suit them best?
Face shapes play a big role. People with rounder heads should elongate their faces by having more length on the chin & less on the cheeks, creating more of a distinct jawline. Men with longer faces should have a stubble style so as not to draw attention to face length. If you’re not sure what will suit you best, play around & try different styles, it will always grow back!
In this blog post, we’re breaking down how to pick the best facial hair style for your face shape, along with a few tips on beard trimming for men to keep your look sharp & well-groomed every time.
How To Determine Your Face Shape

Triangular: The jawline is wider than the cheekbones, with a small forehead & a pointed chin. The face can be any length.
Oval: Face length is greater than the width of the cheekbones, & forehead is greater than the jawline. The shape of the chin is round.
Round: The length & width ratio of the face have similar measurements. The cheekbone is the widest part of the face & the angle of the jaw is not defined.
Long or Oblong: Forehead, cheekbones & jawline are similar in measurement. The face length is the largest measurement.
Square: Face length, cheekbones, forehead & jawline are about the same size. The jaw is sharp.
Rectangular: A mix between square & long face shapes, with a prominent, angular jawline & a longer overall structure. The forehead, cheekbones & jawline are roughly equal in width.
Pear: The jawline is the widest part of the face, while the forehead is narrow. The face appears fuller at the bottom & tapers upward.
Diamond: The cheekbones are the widest part of the face, while the forehead & jawline are narrower. The chin is often pointed, giving the face an angular look.
Full Beard
This beard style takes the most dedication. It consists of a beard, moustache & whiskers, which will grow together to cover your cheeks, chin & neck. This beard style is therefore suitable for any face shape & can grow to a few centimetres before it becomes unwieldy. Use a beard trimmer with adjustable length settings to maintain sharp, clean lines & avoid an overly bushy look.
Best For: Round & Square Face Shapes
A full beard is best suited for round & square faces. For round faces, this is mainly because the extra length of a beard can help create the illusion of an angular face. Just make sure that when growing your beard, you don’t let it get too long or thick as this will only work to make your face look even more round. Instead, when trimming your beard, opt for a style that emphasises your chin. Do this by opting for a beard shape with closely cropped sides & more length at the chin (no bushy sideburns here). Or, if you’re not ready to go full Karl Drogo, instead of a full beard, a goatee is a good option for round faces too.
For square faces, there are a few key differences you want to stick to. Firstly, since you’re already working with angles, what you need is a beard that highlights your strong jawline rather than exaggerates it. Similar to round faces, however, you do want to add length to your face, which can be done with a full beard that is shorter at the sides & longer at the chin. To add proportion, keep the shape a bit rounder (versus square) at the chin.
Semi Beard
A semi beard is similar to a full beard, grown on the chin, upper lip, cheeks & neck but with less hair growth. This type of beard may also be maintained & trimmed regularly with a beard shaver & trimmer to maintain the particular look.
Best For: Triangular & Oval Face Shapes
If you have a triangular face shape, where your cheekbones are the widest part of your face, you want to opt for a beard style that covers the chin, but doesn’t lengthen it, meaning the semi-beard is a perfect option for you. When growing out the shape of the beard, just make sure to go for a bulkier style that will not only conceal the jawline but taper it in a way that offsets your forehead.
For oval faces, unlike those with a round face shape, the goal is to make your face appear fuller, not longer. Opt for a short beard style that will add width to the sides & keep the chin area shorter.
Three-Day Growth
To look after your three-day-beard, let it grow for three days then continue to trim by taking your clippers & running them through your beard against the direction of growth. This will give you even-length stubble across the whole beard area. We recommend using a beard trimmer with a short guard setting, between one to three millimetres. If you have sensitive skin, the three-day-beard is made for you.
Best For: Square Face
Square faces rejoice! You're the face shape that has the most options when it comes to choosing a beard. Having won the genetic lottery with a clean, square jaw, we won’t be surprised if you want to show it all off with a stubble look. Just make sure to keep the growth rounded at the jawline or pointed & not too chiselled.
Designer Stubble
Designer Stubble, also known as a five o’clock shadow, is a slight growth of facial hair. This can be maintained without fully shaving the face clean with the ConairMan trimmer range.
Best For: Rectangular Face Shape
With an elongated shape & a strong jawline, rectangular or oblong shaped faces with soft edges can master nearly any beard & are the face shape most easily able to pull off the 5 O’clock shadow. When choosing a beard style however, we advise avoiding one that will highlight how long your head is & instead stick to either short stubble, a small goatee or even a moustache.
The Xpert Beard shaver & trimmer is your go-to tool for owning your facial hair look & embracing your face shape. Job done!
